HINTS & TIPS FOR DRIVING IN TURKEY

Documents
All cars in Turkey have a set of documents that must be KEPT IN THE CAR at all times. These documents include the registration of the vehicle, details of the owner, proof of the compulsory traffic insurance and any other documents which may be applicable.

Driving license
Tourists do not require a translation of their national driving license, or an international driving license. In Turkey whilst driving the vehicle the driver must carry a valid driving license with them.
PS: Your UK driving licence is valid for driving in Turkey.

Accidents
In the event of any accident which involves damage to the vehicle or people, the accident must be reported to  Solution Property Services. Personal accident insurance is not usually included as standard, as tourists either have their own insurance or their holiday insurance covers them.

Drinking and Driving
The limits in Turkey are quite low so it is best not to drink at all. If found to be over the legal limit, penalties can be severe. A breath test is routinely carried out by the police following any traffic accident.

Parking
‘No parking’ or ‘Restricted Parking’ signs on the roads are often difficult to see or they are missing all together. You run the risk of heavy fines or even the vehicle been towed away if parked in a no parking zone.

Speed Limits
Speed limit start and finish signs are not always in place so be sure of the speed limits for the area you are driving in.

Road signs are not always in place for the speed limits so please ensure you are aware of the legal speed limits for driving here in Turkey.

  • within the town or city limits 50Kph (or as signposted)
  • all normal roads outside city limits, including dual carriageways, 90Kph
  • highways (motorways, autoroute, autobahn) , 120Kph

Driving Standards
The driving standards in Turkey are generally not that good. Many of the Turkish drivers do not know the traffic laws. Providing you keep this in mind and are prepared to expect the unexpected, drive defensively and stay alert, few problems will be encounted.

Highway Tolls
Most roads inTturkey are toll free, the only exception are highways and suspension bridges. The tolls are not expensive.

Traffic Police
Traffic security points are frequent in Turkey. Usually they happen just over the brow of the hill with little or no warning. If requested to stop, the driver must stop immediately, stay in the car and be ready to show their driving license, the papers for the car and the rental agreement.

Traffic Offences
Most traffic offences involving a fine are usually payable on the spot. Traffic fines not paid for on the spot eventually find their way to the tax office where the car is registered.

Gas stations
Turkey does not have as many gas stations as Europe, they tend to open between 6am to 10pm and (highway) stations are normally open 24 hours.
